Standard package of colonoscopy service

Under the Programme, the Government will provide subsidy for a “Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service” which includes:

  1. One pre-procedural consultation
  2. Colonoscopy examination
It is as a day case including conscious sedation and consumables for the removal of polyp e.g. clips, hot biopsy forceps or snare:
    1. For a colonoscopy examination with polyp(s) removal, the histopathology report featuring the pathology result of the removed polyp(s) is included in the Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service.
    2. For an unsuccessful colonoscopy examination, a repeat colonoscopy examination, if decided and agreed by CS and you, will be part of the Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service, i.e. offered without additional charges.
  3. Post-procedural consultation(s)
    1. It is optional and will be required for explaining the result of the colonoscopy examination and subsequent management.
    2. Apart from the option of repeating colonoscopy if the first colonoscopy is unsuccessful, the CS may refer you to receive Computed Tomography Colonography the charges of which will be fully covered by the Government.

You should also be aware that the “Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service" does not include the following items:

  1. Overnight stay in a private hospital.
  2. Monitored anesthetic care or general anaesthesia.
  3. Management for further polypectomy in the situation where the polyp(s) detected during the complete colonoscopy is/are not completely removed.
  4. Management of complications arising from the colonoscopy examination such as bleeding, infection, bowel perforation or severe reaction to sedation.
  5. Management of colorectal cancer or other lesion(s) detected after the colonoscopy examination.

In other words, the Government will not provide subsidy for service items which fall outside the “Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service”. You are advised to discuss with your CS well before the colonoscopy procedure to ascertain who, how and how much these will cost.
