Colorectal cancer in Hong Kong

  • Colorectal cancer is one of the commonest cancers in Hong Kong. In 2015, there were 5,036 newly registered cases, more than 90% of which occurred in patients 50 years of age or older.
  • In 2015, colorectal cancer accounted for 16.6% of new cancer cases. Among them, 2,891 new cases occurred in males and 2,145 new cases occurred in females. The ratio of the number of male patients to that of female patients was 1.3 : 1.
  • In terms of standardised population, the age-standardised incidence rate of colorectal cancer in Hong Kong is similar to those of western countries such as Canada and the UK, and countries in Asia such as Singapore and Japan.
  • Of all fatal cancers in Hong Kong, colorectal cancer is ranked second. In 2016, a total number of 2,089 people died of the cancer, accounting for 14.7% of all cancer deaths.
